FRUIT ROLLUPS
An ongoing series coupling poetic text and edible substrate. The process is simple: I imagine my fat fantasies and queer perversions, and use a Cricut cutter to write (cut, erase) the text into a fresh fruit roll up. I release these on Instagram as a social practice, but they also exist as prompts for performance, installation, and print media.
My fruit roll ups explore the liberatory potential of softness, humor, and bodily excess. I investigate what becomes possible when we stop shrinking ourselves (literally and linguistically) and instead choose vulnerability, humor, decay, and joy as strategies for truth-telling and refusal.
What happens when care is chosen over perfection?
When sweetness isn’t sanitized?
When the body leaks?
Humor in my work is not a shield; it’s a scalpel. When I nap in a hot dog bed or give a webinar on butt munching, I’m not making light, I’m making space. A fruit roll up is a playful, sticky, impermanent vessel to confront deep and often shamed truths. I choose perishable, playful materials that invite decay, thus inviting care. What if tenderness, not fear, were the foundation of visibility?
Like bodies, the fruit roll ups droop, crack, and melt. Fruit becomes flag, nap becomes action, and the outcast body becomes both subject and site of collective liberation. My practice moves through fear, making room for the connection only unruly joy can bring and that can only grow in the absence of control. This work is not an escape from fear; it’s a rehearsal for what becomes imaginable when we finally release it.
In this saccharine place, full of the traces of my fear, I own my insatiability.
